Caring for Your Silk Tie

Silk ties are particularly delicate and are not meant to be cleaned, or even dry cleaned. However, silk ties do get dirty, especially during the meal time, after a few drinks are down the hatch. Proper care is necessary to ensure that these beautiful silk ties not only look elegant but last for many years. Here are a few tips to help you take proper care for your silk ties.

Ø  Untie the Knot: Imagine making knots in your trousers several times a week. Even ironing will not save the fabric from ruin. However, your silk necktie endures being tied in a Four in Hand or Windsor Knot over and over again, without any sign of trouble. Whenever you remove your tie, make sure you untie the knot. After fully untying it, wrap the tie around your hand and place it in a bundle or just hang it for the night. This generally helps to remove the creases and crinkles from the day’s wear. This minimal care can boost your tie’s lifespan significantly.

Ø  While Travelling: When you are travelling, you can use the following methods to make sure your silk ties stay in good condition. Wrap the tie around your fist and store it in one corner of your baggage, so that it does not get squished by your clothes. Another method would be to place the wrapped up tie in the shirt’s collar. Alternatively you could fold the tie halfway and place it either on top or at the bottom of the baggage, where it can lie flat. The best option, however, is to use tie covers that hold at least two to three ties.

Ø  Ironing your Tie: If you really do need to iron your silk tie, make sure you put a clean linen or cotton cloth between the silk tie and the iron. Do not try to completely flatten the tie with the iron, as it may lose its tubular shape and texture. Also, it is better to remove creases in a silk tie using just steam, by passing the iron along the tie, without actually touching the material. This will cause the inlay to pop up again.
