Wearing Neckties to an Interview

As elsewhere so in job interviews, first impressions are made within the first 10 to 20 seconds after meeting someone, which is too little time to know a person. But after one makes a negative impression, it is usually an uphill task to change it. So, make sure that when you are going for a job interview, your posture, your attire and overall appearance creates a positive impression. Your necktie will be a very important aspect of your attire, so make sure you pick an appropriate tie.

Tips for Picking Ties for an Interview
Here are some tips to help you choose the best tie to create the right impression at your interview.

  • Tie Designs: Avoid wearing novelty ties, ties with symbols or ties with cartoons to the interview. You might think that such ties create an individualistic air; but such ties suggest an unprofessional attitude. That is not the impression you are trying to create. Patterned ties with diagonal stripes are an apt choice, provided they match the suit. Small geometric patterns in diamonds or squares look elegant, without being distracting or flashy.
  • Tie Color: The color of your necktie should complement your suit and should be coordinated with the main color. Your tie should not have an overbearing effect on your suit. Avoid flashy or loud colors, as they tend to distract or even annoy interviewers. Black, silver or white ties are also a no go, as you are going for an interview, not attending a wedding or an opera.
  • Be Conservative: Opt for a burgundy or navy blue tie for a conservative look. Tie the necktie such that it ends at the center of your belt buckle. The tie knot is not of much importance as long as it matches the overall conservative outfit.  The simple, Four in Hand, tie knot may prove to be the safest and best bet.
Keep these tips in mind when picking neckties for your interview and you will be on the right track to making a great first impression.
